Incredible and rare piece of history, a "radical" artefact from a time when the British political landscape was undergoing massive shifts.written with such passion by F. M. Fetherston.
The Radical Reformer’s Text Book: A Manifesto of 19th-Century Liberty
Step back into the height of Victorian political upheaval with The Radical Reformer's Text Book. This volume served as a vital "weapon of words" for the grassroots Liberal movement.
Packed with hundreds of curated quotations from great thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, it was designed to empower the common man with the intellectual ammunition needed to advocate for social change. Perhaps most compelling is the publisher's personal plea on the reverse—a dramatic "Important Notice" detailing the tragic loss of his life's work in a railway warehouse fire. Part political manual, part personal survivor's story, this book is a raw, authentic window into the struggle for reform in industrial England.
Estimated Date: c. 1870 – 1885
While the book doesn't show a clear printed date on the cover, we can pinpoint it through several clues:
• The Price: "One Shilling" was a standard price for political pamphlets and popular educational "text books" during the mid-to-late Victorian era.
• The Printer: F. Morgan Fetherston was active in the Huddersfield area during the 1870s and 1880s.
• The Quote: The back cover mentions a quote from Samuel Morley (1809–1886), a famous Member of Parliament and philanthropist. His endorsement suggests the book was likely produced during his peak political influence in the late 1870s.
• The Typography: The mix of bold "slab serif" and "Gothic" fonts is quintessential Victorian printing.
- F. Morgan Fetherston, Huddersfield. No date but clues all point to late Victorian, handwritten inscription to front says 1916
- Hardback with green boards, 176 pages
Condition: Fair: scuffing, foxing and other age related marks to cover and some leafs are loose, but all seem present. Obviously well thumbed by a liberal!
